Cision alternatives for PR monitoring: an honest comparison

Cision's platform, CisionOne, monitors print, online, TV, radio, social, podcast and magazine coverage in real time, and adds reporting, journalist outreach and social listening. Cision also owns PR Newswire for press release distribution and Brandwatch for consumer intelligence, and lists an AI Visibility product for tracking how brands appear in answer engines.

Named customers on Cision's own site include Mastercard, Adobe, 3M, TD Bank, Sony Interactive Entertainment, General Mills, Kohler, PBS and Carnival. Cision also publishes the 2026 State of the Media Report, based on a survey of more than 1,800 journalists.

If the requirement is broadcast and print monitoring at global scale, wire distribution on the same contract, and a vendor procurement has already cleared, Cision is a sound answer. A comparison page that pretends otherwise is not worth reading.

Four differences between these platforms are matters of public record, not opinion.

Pricing is not published by the incumbents. Cision, Meltwater and Muck Rack all require you to request a quote. Muck Rack explains why on its pricing page: proposals are customised to user count and selected modules. Big Ears AI is the only one of the four that lists prices on its site.

Contract length differs. Meltwater states that most partnerships run on annual agreements with a minimum contract length of 12 months, and that enterprise setups may carry a one-off implementation charge. Big Ears AI has no minimum term: plans are monthly, with one-off options for work such as GEO, and the detail is on the pricing page.

Trial access differs. Meltwater states it does not offer a self-serve free trial and points buyers to a guided demo instead. Muck Rack's free tier is for journalists, not PR teams. Big Ears AI offers a two-week trial with no card required.

Monitoring and doing are different products. Cision, Meltwater and Muck Rack are built to tell a comms team what happened and to help it report on that. Big Ears AI is built to find the opportunity, research it, draft the pitch and track the reply. That is a real difference in scope, and it cuts both ways: a tool that drafts outreach is not a substitute for broadcast monitoring.

Three things Big Ears AI does not offer, and they matter to some buyers.

No wire distribution. Cision owns PR Newswire, Meltwater lists Press Distribution and Muck Rack sells it as an add-on. Big Ears AI does not do press release distribution. If a regulated disclosure has to go over a wire, Big Ears AI is not the tool for that job.

No print or broadcast monitoring. Big Ears AI covers news, social, podcasts, reviews, forums, filings and the answer engines. Teams that must evidence TV and radio coverage will still need Cision, Muck Rack's add-on, or a specialist.

A much shorter track record. Cision names Fortune 500 customers on its homepage and Muck Rack names Zapier, Patagonia and Penguin Random House. Big Ears AI is a young company. Anyone weighing platform risk should price that in.

Cision suits enterprise comms teams that need broadcast and print coverage, wire distribution, and one vendor across monitoring, distribution and social.

Meltwater suits teams that want media intelligence and social listening under one contract and are comfortable with a 12-month minimum term.

Muck Rack suits teams whose centre of gravity is media relations. Its database is maintained by journalists themselves, which is a genuine structural advantage over research-team-maintained databases.

Big Ears AI suits agencies and in-house teams that already know what is happening and want the follow-up work done: opportunities found, pitches drafted per journalist, outreach sent and tracked, and a monthly read on how the answer engines describe them.
